Desert Bighorn Sheep in Arizona

Guardians of Arizona’s Rugged Landscapes

The desert bighorn sheep is one of Arizona’s most iconic native species. Known for their incredible agility and strength, these sheep thrive in some of the state’s harshest environments — from steep canyon walls to arid desert mountains. Their survival is a testament to adaptation, resilience, and the importance of dedicated conservation efforts.

Habitat & Range

Desert bighorns inhabit rocky desert mountain ranges, canyons, and mesas across Arizona. These rugged landscapes provide the steep terrain they rely on for safety from predators, while also offering access to limited food and water sources. Because water is scarce, desert bighorns often depend on man-made catchments maintained by ADBSS and our partners.

Conservation Challenges

Despite their resilience, desert bighorn sheep face serious threats:

Our Impact

The Arizona Desert Bighorn Sheep Society (ADBSS) was formed in 1967 largely in response to the decline of desert bighorns. Since then, thanks to transplants, water developments, and habitat protection, populations have rebounded significantly. Today, ADBSS continues to work with agencies and volunteers to secure the future of desert bighorns in Arizona.
